Tamil Cinema and Modern Women
I was watching this tamil movie in one of the zillion channels available on Cable, it was about some 21st Century tamil woman, narrating what interests her the most. I was just thinking that she will have Bharathiyar Poetry in her list and hey Presto ! She did say that she liked Bharathiyar Poetry. Now guys, gimme a break, why does any typical "Modern Women" like Bharathiyar poetry? It sounds too banal, why can't they change this trend for good? Why not Vairamuthu poetry or Karunanidhi's Prison diaries? Dont they find any other interesting thing, which is somewhat different from another Modern Woman? This kinda bothers me so much, huh !

Good qn. My guesses. They like it because,
a)his poetry is damn good and they genuinely like it.
or
b)the script writer for the film doesnt know of any other poet who talks of women's liberation and stuff like that
or
c)if she likes Bharathiyar poetry, they can picturise one of his songs in the film where we can see the heroine fighting injustice, male dominance, blah blah and transform from zero to hero(ine) in one song itself
or
d)when it comes to the subject of modern women, people always get bharathiyar in the mind. this is some image that has been created for decades now. People are just used to it. And so the film directors dont want to change it/ cannot change it/finding difficult to change it.
